Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic

Heat Pump Repairs That Make Sense to Do

Your heat pump is making a noise, or it stopped heating, and the first thing you want to know is whether fixing it is throwing good money after bad. We repair heat pumps across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the Carolinas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington DC. Call us and we will tell you straight what the fault is and whether the repair holds up.

Age Matters, But It Is Not the Whole Story

Age tells us how much life is left, not whether today's repair makes sense. A heat pump in its first several years should almost always be repaired, and often the part is still covered by the manufacturer's parts warranty even if labour is not. Once a system is well into its second decade, we start weighing each repair against what else is likely to fail soon. A unit that has run quietly with clean coils and good airflow can outlast one that sat in a damp crawlspace with a collapsed duct feeding it. We look at how it was installed and maintained, not just the date on the data plate.

The Fault Type Tells Us More Than the Age

Some faults are routine and worth doing at almost any age. Contactors, capacitors, defrost boards, reversing valve solenoids, blower motors, thermostats and low voltage wiring are all normal wear items that we replace and move on. Other faults change the conversation. A failed compressor, a leaking evaporator coil, or a refrigerant leak we cannot locate without cutting into the system are bigger jobs that involve the sealed refrigerant circuit. Repeat refrigerant loss is the one we flag hardest. If a system has been topped up more than once, the leak is still there and the charge will go again. We would rather find the leak than keep adding refrigerant.

Parts Availability and System Matching

A repair only works if the part exists and fits what you already own. Older heat pumps sometimes use components that are discontinued, and a substitute has to match the electrical and refrigerant specifications, not just look similar. Refrigerant type is the other issue. Systems built for older refrigerants get harder and pricier to service as supply tightens, and mixing refrigerant types is not an option. Matching matters too. If your outdoor unit fails and your indoor coil and air handler are a different generation, replacing one half alone can leave you with a mismatched pair that never performs the way either piece was designed to. We say so when that is the case.

How We Think About It On the Visit

We diagnose first and quote second. That means checking the thermostat call, static pressure, temperature split, refrigerant pressures, amp draw on the compressor and blower, defrost operation, and the condition of the coils and the duct connections. In our region a lot of the problem is not the heat pump at all. Ducts in vented crawlspaces sweat, sag, come loose at the boot, and pull humid air into the system, which shows up as poor performance and a frozen coil. Fixing that is cheaper than replacing equipment and it makes the equipment last. Once we know what is actually wrong, we give you the repair option and, if it is close, the replacement option, and we tell you which one we would do in your house.

Honest Cases Where Replacement Wins

There are situations where we will tell you to stop repairing. A failed compressor on an out of warranty system in its mid teens is usually the end, because you are spending real money on the most expensive part of a unit whose other components are the same age. A leaking coil on an older system running a phased down refrigerant is another. So is a heat pump that has needed three or four separate repairs in two seasons, or one that was undersized or badly ducted from day one, where no repair fixes the comfort problem. Cracked cabinet, rusted through base pan, seized fan and bad compressor all at once is a replacement. We will say it plainly rather than sell you a patch.

What You Can Safely Check Before You Call

There are a few things worth looking at while you wait for us. Check the thermostat batteries and confirm it is set to heat or cool and not fan only. Look at the breaker panel for a tripped breaker, and if it trips again after you reset it once, leave it off and call us. Change a dirty filter, because a clogged filter causes more comfort complaints in this region than any single failed part. Clear leaves, mulch and grass clippings back from the outdoor unit so it can breathe. Walk the house and make sure supply and return vents are open. Anything involving refrigerant, gas or high voltage wiring is ours to handle.

Heat Pump Repairs That Make Sense to Do — straight answers

My heat pump needs refrigerant again. Is that a repair or a replacement?

Needing refrigerant means there is a leak, since a sealed system does not consume it. We look for the leak and price the fix. Repeat top ups on an older system running a phased down refrigerant usually point toward replacement.

Can I replace just the outdoor unit and keep my indoor coil?

Sometimes, if the coil is in good shape and matches the new outdoor unit's refrigerant and capacity. Often it does not match, and a mismatched pair underperforms and strains both halves. We check before recommending it.

How long should a heat pump last around here?

Humid summers and damp crawlspaces are hard on equipment, so real world life varies a lot with installation quality, duct condition and filter changes. We judge each system on how it tests, not on a number.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose the whole system

We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the fix

We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
  • Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
  • Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
  • Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.
  • All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
