What a dual-fuel repair actually involves
A dual-fuel system has to hand off cleanly between the heat pump and the furnace, and most of our work is on that handoff rather than either piece of equipment. We confirm which stage the thermostat is calling for, watch the changeover happen in real time, and follow the low-voltage wiring between the thermostat, the outdoor unit and the furnace control board. Sometimes the fix is a setting. Sometimes it is a failed sensor or relay. We tell you which before anything gets replaced.
What we check on site
We start with the thermostat configuration and the balance point, since a wrong setting sends the furnace on when the heat pump would have handled the load. From there we check the outdoor sensor, the reversing valve operation, defrost controls, refrigerant performance in heating mode, and the furnace ignition sequence. In older homes across the region we also inspect duct runs in vented crawlspaces, because leaking or damp returns make a healthy dual-fuel system feel broken.
How we decide repair is the right call
We look at what failed, how the rest of the system is running, and how old each half is. A bad outdoor sensor or a miswired changeover is a straightforward repair on an otherwise sound system. A heat pump losing refrigerant every season next to a furnace with a cracked heat exchanger is a different conversation, and we will say so plainly. You get the findings, the options and our reasoning, then you decide.

Why does my furnace run when it is fifty degrees outside?
The changeover point is likely set too high, or the outdoor sensor is reading wrong. The heat pump should carry mild weather. We check the thermostat configuration and sensor before touching the furnace itself.
Can one half of a dual-fuel system fail without the other?
Yes, and that is common. A heat pump can lose heating capacity while the furnace works fine, or the furnace can fail while the heat pump keeps mild days comfortable. We test both in their own modes.
Is a dual-fuel repair different from standard heat pump repair?
It adds the controls that switch between the two heat sources. Along with normal heat pump diagnostics we verify changeover wiring, balance point settings and the furnace ignition sequence together as one system.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.
- Step 2
We diagnose the whole system
We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
- Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
- Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
- Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.

- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
