What an AC replacement actually involves
We recover the refrigerant from the old system, disconnect the electrical and line set, and pull the outdoor condenser and the indoor coil. New equipment gets set on a level pad or new brackets, brazed to a cleaned or replaced line set, wired, evacuated with a vacuum pump, then charged to the manufacturer's specification. We check the condensate drain and pan, since a plugged drain in a crawlspace or attic causes more damage than the cooling loss ever did. Then we run it and measure performance before we leave.
What we check and install alongside the new unit
Ductwork in a vented crawlspace takes a beating from humidity, so we inspect the trunk, the boots and the insulation before we size anything. Crushed or disconnected runs get repaired. We look at the return path, filter size and grille, the thermostat and its wiring, the disconnect and breaker sizing, and the drain line. If the indoor coil and the outdoor unit are mismatched, we replace both so the system operates the way it was designed to.
How we decide replacement is the right call
Repair first when repair makes sense. We recommend replacement when the compressor has failed, when a refrigerant leak is in the coil or buried line, when an older refrigerant type makes parts hard to source, or when a system has needed several repairs in consecutive summers. How long does an AC replacement take?
Most straight swaps of the outdoor unit and indoor coil take one day. Jobs with duct repairs, a new line set, or difficult crawlspace and attic access can run into a second day. We will tell you before we start.
Do I have to replace the indoor coil too?
Usually yes. The outdoor condenser and the indoor coil are matched to work together. Pairing new outdoor equipment with an old coil normally hurts performance and can void the equipment warranty.
Will a bigger air conditioner cool my house better?
Not typically. An oversized system short-cycles, so it cools fast without pulling humidity out, and humid air feels warmer. We size to the house, not to the old unit's label.
