What Long Run Times Actually Mean

A heat pump is sized to run long and steady, not in short bursts like a furnace. As outdoor temperatures drop into the 30s and 20s, the unit pulls less heat from the outside air, so it needs more minutes to hold your setpoint. Continuous running at 25 degrees outside with the house holding temperature is the system doing its job. The warning signs are different: the house losing ground, air from the vents feeling cool, electric bills climbing hard, or the outdoor unit staying buried in ice. That combination is when a long cycle stops being normal and starts being a heating repair call.

Cause Family One: Airflow And Settings

Start with the cheap stuff, because it causes more nonstop running than anything else. A loaded filter starves the indoor coil and the system runs and runs without moving enough air. Closed or blocked supply vents do the same thing room by room. Thermostats matter too. If someone bumped the fan to ON, air keeps blowing between heating cycles and feels cold, which reads like a failure. Emergency heat left switched on will run the electric strips constantly. In the older brick colonials and ranches we work in, ducts sitting in a vented crawlspace lose real heat before it ever reaches the register, and that alone stretches run times.

Cause Family Two: Defrost And Refrigerant

In damp shoulder weather and cold rain, frost forms on the outdoor coil and the heat pump is supposed to reverse briefly to melt it. When the defrost board, sensor or reversing valve fails, ice builds until the coil cannot absorb heat, and the system runs nonstop while delivering almost nothing. Low refrigerant charge from a leak does the same thing in slower motion, with lukewarm vent air and long cycles that never satisfy. Both are sealed-system and control work. Refrigerant is not a homeowner task and never something to top off yourself. This is where an air conditioning repair visit and a heating repair visit look identical, because it is the same equipment.

Cause Family Three: Load, Sizing And The Building

Sometimes the equipment is fine and the house is losing heat faster than the heat pump can add it. Missing crawlspace insulation, disconnected or crushed flex duct, leaky boots at the register and open crawl vents all bleed capacity. A unit that was undersized at install, or an addition put on years later, will run continuously on the coldest nights and rely on backup heat. Balance point matters here. Below a certain outdoor temperature every heat pump needs help from the auxiliary heat, and if those strips or the gas backup are not staging in properly, you feel it as a system that runs and never catches up.

What You Can Check, And What We Do Differently

Safe homeowner checks: change the filter, put fresh batteries in the thermostat and confirm it is set to HEAT with the fan on AUTO, check for a tripped breaker, make sure supply and return vents are open, and clear leaves, snow and shrub growth back from the outdoor unit. Do not chip ice off the coil or open any panels.
