What the job involves
A whole-home dehumidifier is a sealed unit with its own coil and blower, mounted near your air handler or in the crawlspace, ducted so it dries the air and sends it back into the house. We run a condensate drain to a suitable point, wire in a humidistat control, and set it to hold a target level so it works with your cooling instead of fighting it. Most installs take a day. Ducted units in tight crawlspaces take longer, and we will tell you that before we start.
What we check before we install anything
We measure humidity in a few spots, not one, because a first floor at 52 percent and a crawlspace at 75 percent are two different problems. We look at duct sealing and insulation in vented crawlspaces, since damp air pulled through leaky returns shows up as sticky rooms upstairs. We check the AC for oversizing and short cycling, filter condition, drain pan and trap, and any standing water or vapour barrier gaps. Sometimes the fix is sealing and drainage. We will say so.
How we decide it is the right call
A whole-home dehumidifier makes sense when the moisture load stays high after the obvious sources are handled and the cooling equipment is running correctly. Signs we weigh: readings above 60 percent for weeks, musty odours in shoulder seasons when the AC barely runs, condensation on supply registers, cupping floors, or a crawlspace that stays wet after grading and gutter work. Will my AC alone handle humidity?
Cooling removes some moisture, but only while it runs. In damp spring and fall weather the AC cycles briefly and leaves the air heavy. A dehumidifier runs on humidity, not temperature, so it covers those stretches.
Where does the unit go?
Usually near the air handler in a basement or utility space, or hung in the crawlspace where it can be serviced. We need space for airflow, ducting and a condensate drain that runs downhill to a proper outlet.
What humidity level should I aim for?
Most homes feel right between 45 and 55 percent. We set the control in that range and check readings on a second visit if needed, since crawlspace and living-space numbers often differ.
